What exactly is AI?

Artificial Intelligence, commonly referred to as AI, is a field in data science that focuses on generating intelligent machines with the ability to imitate human intelligence. The main objective is to develop algorithms that empower computers to learn from data, make decisions or predictions, and tackle intricate problems. AI can be classified into two categories: Narrow AI, which specializes in specific tasks like voice recognition, and General AI, which possesses the capability to perform any intellectual task that a human can. Presently, the AI technology we primarily utilize is Narrow AI. Nevertheless, researchers are actively working towards accomplishing General AI.

AI History:

The idea of AI was first put forward in 1956 by John McCarthy. Since then, AI has exponentially grown from being just a theory of replicating human behavior to the current state where it has become part of our daily lives. Here are some of the significant milestones in the development of AI:

1970:

In the 1970’s we had an introduction of something called “Expert Systems” in the realm of AI. Expert systems were smart machines that had programs that tried to replicate things that humans were good at. For example, if you were good at fixing cars, these expert systems could provide you with advice about fixing cars.

These expert systems would have a set of instructions and rules to follow, similar to present AI. A famous example of an expert system is the MYCIN which was developed by Stanford University. MYCIN was specialized with providing medical advice. It was used to help doctors to figure out what sickness someone had and would provide some symptom advice and suggest the best treatments available based on the data it had at the time.

1980:

In the 1980s, there was a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence with the emergence of rule-based systems. These systems were specifically designed to tackle knowledge representation and reasoning, paving the way for further progress in the field. There was also the development of Neural Networks as well as the limitations of ‘Expert Systems’ becoming more apparent.

Rule-Based Positioning is where these specialised computer’s followed a predefined set of rules & instructions to make decisions. You can think of this as ‘if this, then that’ approach. These systems would be given these rules and would then execute them.

A Neural Network was (and still is) the research of how the human brain works. These are computational models were trained to recognize patterns and learn from the data provided to understand how the human brain works.

1990:

While the 1980’s were the introduction of training computer’s, it really took off in the 1990’s.The idea of machine learning evolved and started gaining popularity. Technologies such as neural networks developed further while there was an emergence in something called a ‘decision tree’, leading to developments in natural language processing and computer vision.

‘Decision tree’ is an algorithm that was developed by Ross Quinlan & was used to generate decision trees. The algorithm was also known as C4.5. The algorithm was known for being able to handle both categorical and continuous data. Categorical = attributes that are categorical in nature. (Red, Green, Blue) Continuous = Variable data that change’s over time. (Temperature) Decision tree’s could also handle missing values by filling in the gaps.

2000:

AI continued to rise. We witnessed the birth of robotics, including unmanned vehicles and the use of autonomous drones & the exploration of AI applications such as Virtual assistants.

Some virtual assistants that were developed and explored during this period were Apple’s SIri & IBM’s Watson. These AI systems could understand human queries and enhance the user experience. Another notable improvement was that Google (the biggest search engine in the world) started using AI algorithm’s to improve search results.

There were numerous developments in AI during this time period from all of the above to some niche areas like data mining, gaming & recommendation systems. Virtually every industry had a development in AI during the 2000s

2010:

The 2010s saw explosive growth and transformation in AI. There were numerous developments. Deep learning was a huge one, due to the advancements in neural networks breakthroughs came in the form of AlexNet, ResNet & Transformer models that lead to improvements in image recognition, natural language processing, speech recognition and more.

Machine Learning:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) learns through a method called Machine Learning (ML). Unlike traditional programming where explicit rules are defined, ML involves training an algorithm to learn patterns from data, much like how a human would learn from experience. Machine learning can be categorized into three types: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning.

  • Supervised Learning: In this method, the AI is provided with labeled training data, comprising both the input and the desired output. The algorithm learns the relationship between the input and output during the training phase, and utilizes this knowledge to make predictions when presented with new, unseen data.
  • Unsupervised Learning: Here, the AI is given unlabeled training data. The algorithm is tasked with finding patterns or inherent structures in the data, without any preexisting guidance. This could be clustering customers into different groups based on their buying behavior or detecting anomalies in network traffic.
  • Reinforcement Learning: In this approach, an AI system, often referred to as an agent, interacts with an environment to learn how to perform a task. The agent makes decisions, receives feedback (rewards or penalties), and adjusts its approach to maximize the potential reward over time.

The power of AI lies in its ability to learn from vast amounts of data, extracting insights and making predictions that would be impossible for humans due to the scale and complexity of the data.

Deep Learning:

Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that utilizes artificial neural networks with many layers (hence the term “deep”). These neural networks attempt to simulate the behavior of the human brain—albeit far from matching its ability—in order to “learn” from large amounts of data. While a neural network with a single layer can still make approximate predictions, additional hidden layers can help optimize the accuracy.

Deep learning drives many artificial intelligence (AI) applications and services that improve automation, performing analytical and physical tasks without human intervention. This technology is behind driverless cars, enables voice-controlled virtual assistants, powers online recommendation offerings, and fuels image recognition in software solutions. Through deep learning, we witness a blend of advanced data computing, algorithm development, and model optimization to produce state-of-the-art AI applications.

Human Intelligence in AI:

Human intelligence in AI, often referred to as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is the representation of generalized human cognitive abilities in machines so that they can understand, learn, and apply knowledge. AGI is designed to comprehend or learn any intellectual task that a human being can, exhibiting a form of omnipotent machine intelligence.

In contrast to specialized AI that excels in a single task, like playing chess or categorizing images, AGI can outperform humans at most economically valuable work. AGI has a deep understanding of tasks and can transfer knowledge from one domain to another, adapting to new contexts.

The idea behind AGI is not just to mechanize existing human capabilities but also to provide a system that can reason, learn from experience, accumulate knowledge, comprehend complex concepts, plan, perceive its surroundings, and interact using natural language. This sort of complete AI system stands as a major milestone that is yet to be accomplished in AI research.
